[Verse 1]
A spear of craving wounds the soul,
A restless heart that can't be whole.
Like flames that rise upon the head,
Awaken now before they're spread.
[Pre-Chorus]
Stop the anger,
Stop the fear,
Truth is calling,
Love is near.
[Chorus]
Extinguish the fire within,
Let mindfulness begin.
Lay down the weight of pride and pain,
And peace will bloom again.
No walls to keep us apart,
Compassion lights the heart.
When ego fades and kindness grows,
The path to lasting peace unfolds.
[Verse 2]
No self to guard,
No hate to feed,
Release the chains
Of fear and greed.
The world can heal
When hearts can see,
That love begins
With letting be.
[Bridge]
Like one who pulls the spear away,
Like one who saves the light of day,
Each mindful breath,
Each peaceful choice,
Becomes the world's united voice.
[Final Chorus]
Extinguish the fire within,
Let every life begin again.
With wisdom shining like the sun,
The many finally live as one.
Hand in hand,
Across the sky,
Peace is born
When selves let die.
Mindful hearts will always find
A brighter future for humankind.
[Outro]
Extinguish the fire...
Awaken the light...
One mindful heart...
Can change the world tonight.

Satthi Sutta Points the Way to World Peace: Mindfulness Is the Key to Extinguishing the Fires of Desire and Ego
The Satthi Sutta, found in the Samyutta Nikaya of the Pali Canon, presents a profound teaching on mindfulness as the essential path to overcoming suffering and preventing conflict.
In this discourse, a deva tells the Blessed One that a monk should cultivate constant mindfulness to abandon sensual desire, just as a person pierced by a spear urgently pulls it out, or someone whose head is on fire immediately extinguishes the flames without delay.
The Buddha then deepens the teaching by explaining that practitioners should not only abandon sensual craving but also eliminate self-identity view (Sakkāya-diṭṭhi)—the mistaken belief in a permanent self. This attachment gives rise to selfishness, hatred, discrimination, and violence.
Applied to world peace, the Satthi Sutta teaches that conflicts among individuals, communities, nations, and civilizations often originate from greed, attachment, and rigid identification with personal interests, ethnicity, religion, ideology, or power. When leaders and citizens cultivate mindfulness, they become aware of their emotions, desires, and prejudices before acting. This awareness creates space for compassion, dialogue, wisdom, and peaceful cooperation instead of hostility and violence.
Peace scholars observe that the Satthi Sutta offers a timeless framework for conflict transformation. Sustainable peace begins by removing the inner causes of conflict rather than merely suppressing its external symptoms. When the inner fires of greed, hatred, and delusion are extinguished, cycles of revenge and violence gradually come to an end.
The message of the Satthi Sutta extends far beyond monastic practice. It provides valuable guidance for politics, education, economics, and international relations in the twenty-first century. By cultivating mindfulness and letting go of ego, humanity can build a global culture founded upon understanding, compassion, reconciliation, and lasting peace.
