Mahācattārīsaka Sutta Declares Right View the Foundation of World Peace
Bangkok – As nations continue to confront war, polarization, and social unrest, Buddhist and Peace Studies scholars have proposed applying the teachings of the Mahācattārīsaka Sutta, found in Volume 14 of the Pali Canon (Majjhima Nikāya, Uparipaṇṇāsaka), as a framework for building sustainable world peace. They emphasize that genuine peace begins with Right View (Sammā Diṭṭhi), the guiding principle that directs all other aspects of the Noble Eightfold Path.
The Mahācattārīsaka Sutta explains that the Noble Right Concentration (Sammā Samādhi) does not arise independently. Instead, it is supported by seven complementary factors, with Right View serving as the leading element that guides right thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration toward wholesome development.
The Buddha distinguishes Right View and Right Intention into two levels. The mundane level encourages moral conduct and wholesome actions that generate merit and social well-being. The supramundane level leads directly to the eradication of greed, hatred, and delusion, culminating in liberation from suffering.
According to peace scholars, these teachings provide practical guidance for resolving modern conflicts. Right Effort encourages individuals to abandon harmful thoughts and behaviors before they develop into violence, while Right Mindfulness enables people to recognize and overcome prejudice, anger, and fear before they influence decisions.
Researchers further explain that if political leaders, policymakers, business executives, and citizens adopt Right View as the foundation of their decisions, dialogue will replace hostility, justice will prevail over exploitation, and cooperation will become stronger than confrontation.
The Sutta also demonstrates that every wholesome factor of the Noble Eightfold Path supports one another in leading to Right Concentration and ultimately Right Liberation (Sammā Vimutti). This illustrates that lasting peace is not achieved through temporary solutions but through the continuous cultivation of wisdom, ethical conduct, mental discipline, and compassion.

กรุงเทพฯ – ท่ามกลางความท้าทายของโลกยุคปัจจุบันที่เผชิญสงคราม ความแตกแยก และความขัดแย้งทั้งในระดับประเทศและระหว่างประเทศ นักวิชาการด้านพระพุทธศาสนาและสันติศึกษาได้เสนอให้นำหลักธรรมจาก มหาจัตตารีสกสูตร ในพระไตรปิฎก เล่มที่ ๑๔ พระสุตตันตปิฎก เล่ม ๖ มัชฌิมนิกาย อุปริปัณณาสก์ มาประยุกต์ใช้เป็นแนวทางสร้างสันติภาพโลก โดยย้ำว่าการสร้างสันติภาพที่ยั่งยืนต้องเริ่มต้นจาก “ความเห็นชอบ” หรือ สัมมาทิฐิ ซึ่งเป็นรากฐานของการคิด การพูด และการกระทำที่ถูกต้อง
มหาจัตตารีสกสูตรอธิบายว่า สัมมาสมาธิของพระอริยะ มิได้เกิดขึ้นโดยลำพัง หากอาศัยองค์ธรรมที่เกื้อหนุนกัน โดยมีสัมมาทิฐิเป็นผู้นำและกำกับมรรคองค์อื่นให้ดำเนินไปอย่างถูกต้อง พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงให้เห็นว่าความเห็นชอบเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการพัฒนาชีวิต เพราะเมื่อบุคคลเข้าใจความจริงตามหลักเหตุและผล ก็จะสามารถเลือกแนวทางที่นำไปสู่ประโยชน์แก่ตนเองและส่วนรวม
พระสูตรยังทรงจำแนกสัมมาทิฐิและสัมมาสังกัปปะออกเป็นสองระดับ ได้แก่ ระดับ โลกิยะ ซึ่งเป็นความดีที่ยังเป็นเหตุแห่งบุญและการดำเนินชีวิตอย่างมีศีลธรรม และระดับ โลกุตระ ซึ่งเป็นปัญญาที่มุ่งสู่การดับกิเลสและความหลุดพ้นอย่างแท้จริง แนวทางดังกล่าวสะท้อนให้เห็นว่าการพัฒนาสังคมควรเริ่มจากการส่งเสริมคุณธรรมในชีวิตประจำวัน พร้อมทั้งสร้างโอกาสให้มนุษย์ได้พัฒนาปัญญาและจิตใจอย่างต่อเนื่อง
ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านสันติศึกษาระบุว่า การสร้างสันติภาพโลกจำเป็นต้องอาศัย สัมมาวายามะ หรือความเพียรชอบ ในการละความคิดและพฤติกรรมที่ก่อให้เกิดความเกลียดชัง รวมทั้ง สัมมาสติ หรือการมีสติรู้เท่าทันตนเอง เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้ความโลภ ความโกรธ และความหลงครอบงำการตัดสินใจของบุคคลและองค์กร
นักวิชาการชี้ว่า หากผู้นำประเทศ นักการเมือง ภาคธุรกิจ และประชาชนยึดหลักสัมมาทิฐิเป็นพื้นฐานของการกำหนดนโยบาย การเจรจา และการแก้ไขปัญหา ความขัดแย้งจะสามารถคลี่คลายได้ด้วยเหตุผล ความเมตตา และความยุติธรรม แทนการใช้ความรุนแรงหรือการแสวงหาผลประโยชน์ฝ่ายเดียว
นอกจากนี้ มหาจัตตารีสกสูตรยังแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ขององค์ธรรมทุกประการที่เกื้อกูลกันจนเกิดสัมมาสมาธิและนำไปสู่ สัมมาวิมุตติ หรือความหลุดพ้นอย่างสมบูรณ์ หลักการดังกล่าวสะท้อนว่า การสร้างสันติภาพมิใช่การแก้ไขปัญหาเฉพาะหน้า แต่เป็นกระบวนการพัฒนาความคิด จิตใจ และพฤติกรรมอย่างเป็นระบบและต่อเนื่อง
