Isigili Sutta Inspires World Peace Through Honoring the Enlightened and Cultivating Inner Wisdom
Bangkok – Buddhist and Peace Studies scholars have proposed applying the teachings of the Isigili Sutta, found in Volume 14 of the Pali Canon (Majjhima Nikāya, Uparipaṇṇāsaka), as a guiding principle for building world peace. They emphasize that remembering and honoring those who have attained liberation from defilements can inspire humanity to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and harmony—the essential foundations of lasting peace.
The Isigili Sutta recounts the occasion when the Buddha was residing at Mount Isigili near the city of Rājagaha. He explained that the mountain had preserved the same name throughout history, unlike many surrounding mountains whose names changed over time. According to ancient tradition, the mountain was called "Isigili," meaning "the mountain that swallowed the sages," because numerous Paccekabuddhas entered the mountain to dwell, meditate, and attain their final passing away.
The Buddha praised five hundred Paccekabuddhas who attained enlightenment through their own wisdom. Although they did not establish a universal teaching as Fully Enlightened Buddhas do, they completely eradicated greed, hatred, and delusion. The Buddha also proclaimed the names of many Paccekabuddhas to honor their extraordinary virtues and preserve their legacy for future generations.
Peace scholars explain that the Isigili Sutta offers valuable lessons for modern peacebuilding. Societies that recognize and celebrate individuals of integrity, selflessness, and moral excellence are more likely to cultivate cultures of honesty, compassion, and mutual respect. Such role models encourage peaceful coexistence across communities and nations.
The Sutta further teaches that the deepest source of human conflict is not ethnicity, religion, or political ideology, but the inner defilements of greed, anger, and ignorance. As individuals transform their minds through ethical conduct and wisdom, violence and hatred naturally diminish.
Researchers conclude that sustainable world peace begins with inner peace. By honoring enlightened beings, developing moral character, and reducing mental defilements, humanity can establish peaceful families, communities, nations, and ultimately a harmonious global society.
Far beyond being a historical account of the Paccekabuddhas, the Isigili Sutta presents a timeless vision of peace founded upon virtue, wisdom, gratitude, and inner liberation—principles that remain profoundly relevant in the twenty-first century.

พระพุทธเจ้าทรงยกย่องพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้าจำนวน ๕๐๐ พระองค์ ผู้ตรัสรู้ได้ด้วยพระองค์เอง แม้มิได้ทรงประกาศพระศาสนาอย่างพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า แต่ทรงบรรลุความหลุดพ้นจากโลภะ โทสะ และโมหะอย่างสมบูรณ์ พร้อมทั้งทรงประกาศพระนามของพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้าหลายพระองค์ เพื่อเป็นการเชิดชูเกียรติและให้ชนรุ่นหลังระลึกถึงคุณธรรมอันประเสริฐของผู้หลุดพ้น
ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านสันติศึกษากล่าวว่า หลักธรรมจากอิสิคิลิสูตรสามารถประยุกต์ใช้กับการสร้างสันติภาพโลกได้ โดยการยกย่องบุคคลผู้มีคุณธรรม ผู้เสียสละ และผู้อุทิศตนเพื่อประโยชน์ส่วนรวมให้เป็นแบบอย่างของสังคม เพราะการมีต้นแบบแห่งความดีช่วยปลูกฝังค่านิยมแห่งความซื่อสัตย์ ความเมตตา และการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสันติ
นอกจากนี้ การระลึกถึงพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้าผู้ตัดกิเลสได้โดยสิ้นเชิง ยังสะท้อนให้เห็นว่าต้นเหตุของความขัดแย้งในโลกมิได้อยู่ที่เชื้อชาติ ศาสนา หรืออุดมการณ์ หากแต่อยู่ที่กิเลสในจิตใจของมนุษย์ เมื่อบุคคลฝึกฝนตนเองให้ลดความโลภ ความโกรธ และความหลง ความรุนแรงและความเกลียดชังก็จะลดลงตามลำดับ
นักวิชาการเห็นพ้องกันว่า การสร้างสันติภาพที่แท้จริงต้องเริ่มจากการสร้าง "สันติภายใน" ผ่านการพัฒนาจิตใจและการเจริญปัญญา ก่อนจะขยายผลสู่ครอบครัว ชุมชน ประเทศ และประชาคมโลก การยกย่องคุณธรรมของผู้หลุดพ้นดังที่ปรากฏในอิสิคิลิสูตร จึงเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้มนุษยชาติร่วมกันสร้างสังคมที่ยึดมั่นในความดี ความเสียสละ และความเคารพต่อคุณค่าของชีวิต
อิสิคิลิสูตรจึงมิได้เป็นเพียงบันทึกประวัติศาสตร์แห่งพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้า หากยังเป็นบทเรียนสำคัญที่ชี้ให้เห็นว่า การระลึกถึงผู้ทรงคุณธรรม การพัฒนาจิตใจ และการละกิเลส คือรากฐานของสันติภาพอันยั่งยืน ซึ่งสามารถประยุกต์ใช้ได้ทั้งในระดับบุคคล องค์กร และประชาคมโลกในศตวรรษที่ ๒๑.
