The discourse records a dialogue between Venerable Bhūmija and Prince Jayasena concerning the conditions that lead to successful spiritual practice. The Buddha explains that merely wishing for success is insufficient if one's methods are incorrect.
To illustrate this truth, He compares wrong practice to attempting to milk a cow through its horn or extracting oil from sand—efforts that can never succeed regardless of determination. Conversely, practicing according to the Noble Eightfold Path naturally produces results, just as oil can be pressed from sesame seeds or fire can be generated from dry wood.
The Buddha's teaching emphasizes that right view (Sammā Diṭṭhi) is the essential foundation for all genuine achievement. When people understand causes and conditions correctly, they choose actions that naturally lead to beneficial outcomes.
Applied to today's world, the Bhūmija Sutta teaches that lasting peace cannot be achieved through violence, prejudice, or unrealistic expectations. Instead, governments, organizations, and individuals must address the true causes of conflict with wisdom, ethical conduct, dialogue, and compassion.

นักวิชาการระบุว่า หลักธรรมดังกล่าวสามารถประยุกต์ใช้กับการสร้างสันติภาพโลกได้อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม เพราะความขัดแย้งในปัจจุบันจำนวนมากเกิดจากการแก้ปัญหาที่ปลายเหตุ การใช้อารมณ์ ความรุนแรง หรือผลประโยชน์เฉพาะหน้า แทนที่จะวิเคราะห์ต้นเหตุอย่างเป็นระบบ
