[Verse 1]
Wisdom is the light that shines,
Guiding hearts through troubled times.
It helps us see what truth can be,
And find the path to harmony.
[Verse 2]
Mindfulness keeps the heart awake,
Through every choice and step we take.
Though life may move so fast each day,
A mindful heart will find its way.
[Chorus]
Wisdom is the light that guides our way,
Mindfulness keeps us awake each day.
Work with a heart that is strong and true,
Let Dharma guide all that we do.
Rain falls softly on the earth,
Giving every living thing its birth.
Like a mother caring for her child,
Rain makes the earth alive and mild.
[Verse 3]
Through honest work we build our lives,
With strength and wisdom that survives.
Hands together, hearts as one,
We build a future for everyone.
[Verse 4]
Rain touches fields and rivers flow,
Giving life to all we know.
Human beings and nature share
A living world that we must care.
[Bridge]
May wisdom light the road ahead,
May mindful hearts remove our dread.
May we protect the earth we share,
With compassion, wisdom, love, and care.
[Final Chorus]
Wisdom is the light,
Mindfulness is the way.
Work gives life its meaning,
And nature gives us every day.
May the rain nourish the earth,
May all living beings thrive.
With wisdom, peace, and mindfulness,
May the world remain alive.
The Pajota Sutta: Wisdom as the Light, Mindfulness as Wakefulness, and Rain as the Support of Life
Pajota Sutta, Discourse No. 10
The Sutta Piṭaka, Saṃyutta Nikāya, Sagāthāvagga
The deity asked the Blessed One:
“What is the light in the world?
What is the principle of wakefulness in the world?
What is the companion in the work of one who lives by work?
What sustains his life?
What nourishes a person, whether diligent or idle,
like a mother caring for her child?
And upon what do living beings that depend upon the earth sustain their lives?”
The Blessed One answered:
“Wisdom is the light in the world.
Mindfulness is the principle of wakefulness in the world.
Cattle are companions in the work of one who lives by work.
The plow sustains his livelihood.
Rain nourishes a person, whether diligent or idle,
like a mother caring for her child.
Living beings that depend upon the earth sustain their lives through rain.”
The Pajota Sutta presents a profound reflection on wisdom, mindfulness, livelihood, work, and nature.
The Buddha declares that wisdom is the light of the world. Wisdom enables people to understand causes and consequences, distinguish what is beneficial from what is harmful, and choose an appropriate path in life.
The Buddha also states that mindfulness is the principle of wakefulness. Mindfulness keeps a person from living carelessly. Knowledge without mindfulness can be misused, while mindfulness helps guide knowledge toward beneficial action.
Wisdom can therefore be understood as the light that reveals the path, while mindfulness is the awareness that keeps us awake as we walk that path.
The reference to cattle and the plow reflects the agricultural society of ancient India, where animals and farming tools were essential to people's livelihoods. This teaching can also be applied to modern life: human beings depend on work, tools, resources, and cooperation in order to sustain themselves.
The Buddha's reference to rain as a mother nourishing her children emphasizes the fundamental relationship between nature and life. Rain supports agriculture, water supplies, food production, and countless living beings.
In the modern world, this teaching can inspire greater awareness of environmental responsibility and the need to live in harmony with nature.
The Pajota Sutta can therefore be summarized in four principles:
Use wisdom to see the way.
Use mindfulness to remain awake.
Work responsibly to sustain life.
Respect nature as the foundation of life.
In an age filled with information and technology, people may possess more information without necessarily possessing more wisdom. The faster modern life becomes, the more important mindfulness becomes.
The message of the Pajota Sutta remains deeply relevant:
Wisdom shows us the way.
Mindfulness keeps us awake.
Work sustains our lives.
Nature sustains all living beings.
