Song: Conquer Anger Inspired by The Magha Sutta

[Verse 1]

When anger burns within the heart,
Every word can tear a world apart.
A victory gained by defeating someone else
May leave us with regret within ourselves.

[Pre-Chorus]
Take a moment, breathe in slow,
Watch your anger come and go.
You do not have to conquer the world,
Just conquer the anger in your soul.

[Chorus]
Conquer anger, and the heart finds peace,
Conquer anger, and sorrow starts to cease.
Poison at the root, sweetness at the end,
Let the anger go, and find your peace again.

[Verse 2]
When someone causes pain inside your heart,
Do not let anger decide where you start.
Forgiveness is not a sign that you are weak,
It means you refuse to let anger make you bleak.

[Bridge]
To defeat another may be victory for a day,
But conquering yourself will light a lasting way.
Lay down resentment, release the pain,
Let compassion fall like gentle rain.

[Final Chorus]
Conquer anger, and the heart finds peace,
Conquer anger, and sorrow starts to cease.
Put out the fire with wisdom and mindfulness,
And let the heart return to happiness.

[Outro]
When anger fades away,
Sorrow fades away too.
When the heart no longer fights the world,
Peace begins within you.

The Teaching of the Magha Sutta: Conquering Anger Leads to Happiness

Savatthi — The Buddha taught a profound principle concerning the nature of anger and the way to overcome it. He explained that a person who destroys anger can live happily and be free from sorrow. This teaching is found in the Magha Sutta, the third discourse of its section in the Saṃyutta Nikāya, recorded in the Sutta Piṭaka, Tipiṭaka, Volume 15.

The discourse took place at Jeta’s Grove, the monastery donated by Anathapindika, near the city of Savatthi. During the night, the celestial being Magha approached the Buddha, paid homage to him, and stood respectfully to one side.

Magha then asked the Buddha what a person should destroy in order to live happily and what should be destroyed in order to be free from sorrow. He also asked which particular thing the Buddha approved of destroying.

The Buddha replied that a person who destroys anger lives happily, and one who destroys anger does not fall into sorrow.

The Buddha further described anger as something that has “poison at its root and sweetness at its tip.” In other words, anger may initially appear powerful or satisfying. It may give a person the temporary feeling of victory or control. Yet its consequences can bring suffering, conflict, regret, and sorrow.

The teaching does not refer to physically destroying anyone or anything. Rather, it means removing anger from the mind and overcoming it through mindfulness, wisdom, patience, and understanding.

This teaching remains highly relevant in modern society. Anger can arise in families, workplaces, communities, and social interactions. When anger controls the mind, a person may speak or act in ways that cause harm and later lead to regret.

However, when a person pauses, becomes mindful, and examines the cause of anger before reacting, conflict can become an opportunity for understanding. Pain can become a lesson, and hostility can be transformed into peace.

The central message of the Magha Sutta is therefore the importance of conquering the enemy within — anger itself. Defeating another person may bring only temporary victory, but overcoming one's own anger can lead to genuine inner peace and lasting happiness.

The teaching leaves us with a simple but profound message:

When anger is extinguished, sorrow is extinguished.
When the mind is no longer ruled by anger, peace and happiness can arise from within.
