[Verse 1]
By day, the sun shines across the sky,
By night, the moon comes shining by.
A flame lights the way through the darkest night,
But one special light reaches the human heart.
[Pre-Chorus]
The light outside allows us to see,
But the light of Dharma awakens wisdom within.
From the darkness of ignorance,
We journey toward the path where truth is seen.
[Chorus]
There are four kinds of light that shine:
The sun, the moon, the fire, and the Dharma divine.
But which light shines highest within the heart?
It is the light of wisdom,
Which the Buddha leads us to discover.
[Verse 2]
When the heart has lost its way in the dark,
Attachment causes us to stumble and fall.
The Dharma shines the way so we understand,
See suffering, its cause, and the path to its end.
[Bridge]
It is not merely the light that shines from the sky,
But wisdom that shines deep within.
Opening the heart to see the truth,
Awakening life from the sleep of delusion.
[Final Chorus]
There are four kinds of light that shine:
The sun, the moon, the fire, and the Noble Buddha divine.
The light of Dharma illuminates the world and the heart,
Leading us beyond the darkness
Toward the wisdom within.
[Ending]
When the heart holds Dharma... darkness fades away.
When wisdom arises... life can see the way.
The truest light is never far away,
It lives within the heart...
When wisdom begins to bloom. The Magadha Sutta: Four Lights in the World and the Supreme Light of the Buddha
Savatthi — The Magadha Sutta, the fourth discourse of its section in the Saṃyutta Nikāya, presents an important Buddhist teaching concerning the “lights of the world.” The discourse distinguishes between physical light and the higher light of wisdom that leads human beings out of ignorance.
According to the discourse, the celestial being Magadha approached the Buddha and asked how many kinds of light exist in the world. He came to the Buddha seeking an understanding of this question.
The Buddha answered that there are four kinds of light in the world, and there is no fifth kind. These four are the sun, the moon, fire, and the Buddha.
The sun illuminates the world during the day. The moon provides light during the night. Fire gives light in particular places, both during the day and at night.
But beyond all these forms of light stands the Fully Enlightened Buddha, whom the Buddha described as the highest and most excellent of all lights.
The deeper meaning of this teaching goes beyond physical illumination. It points toward the “light of wisdom.” The sun, moon, and fire allow people to see the external world, but the light of the Dhamma enables people to see and understand the truth within their own minds.
From a Buddhist perspective, the most important darkness is therefore not the darkness of night, but ignorance, or avijjā. Ignorance can give rise to delusion, attachment, and suffering.
The Buddha is described as a light because he discovered the path leading to the cessation of suffering and taught others how to understand the truth of life through wisdom and practice.
This teaching remains meaningful in the modern world. People today have access to an enormous amount of information, yet information alone does not necessarily produce wisdom.
Physical light allows us to see the world, but the light of wisdom allows us to understand the world and ourselves.
The Magadha Sutta therefore encourages people to seek the inner light of wisdom through learning, reflection, mindfulness, and the practice of the Dhamma.
The Buddha's role as the supreme light can thus be understood not merely as a symbol of illumination, but as that of a teacher who shows humanity the path toward awakening and the discovery of wisdom within.
