Upon the river of this life,
We strive and search for where to go.
The currents of desire and delusion
Keep pulling us where we do not know.
Until we find the shore of truth,
We must keep moving with our heart.
With mindfulness, wisdom, and perseverance,
Step by step, we make a start.
[Pre-Chorus]
As long as we have not reached the shore,
We must swim against the stream.
As long as truth has not been seen,
We must awaken from the dream.
[Chorus]
When we reach the far shore,
We do not need to swim anymore.
When delusion fades away,
We need not struggle as before.
When all the taints have come to an end,
The cycle of becoming fades away.
The end of birth, the end of death—
We have reached the shore of Dharma.
[Verse 2]
Our effort is not for attachment,
Nor to make desire our guide.
We strive to leave craving behind
And let wisdom shine inside.
The Dharma is a peaceful shore,
A refuge from the raging stream.
When wisdom sees the truth clearly,
The mind awakens from the dream.
[Bridge]
We have swum so far
From the shores of ignorance,
Through nights of fear and uncertainty,
Searching for the light of truth.
Now wisdom shines within the heart,
And suddenly we understand:
The shore we have been seeking
Was never really far away.
[Final Chorus]
When we reach the far shore,
We do not need to swim anymore.
When delusion fades away,
We need not struggle as before.
When all the taints have come to an end,
The cycle of becoming fades away.
The end of birth, the end of death—
We have reached the shore of Dharma.
[Outro]
For those who have not reached the shore,
Keep striving with wisdom and care.
For those still caught within the stream,
Let mindfulness and wisdom lead.
And when the truth is fully known,
The heart will finally understand:
We have reached the far shore...
We do not need to swim anymore.
Tamali Sutta — The One Who Has Reached the Far Shore
Saṃyutta Nikāya, Sagāthāvagga, Tamali Sutta
According to the Tamali Sutta, Tamali, a celestial being, approached the Blessed One at the Jetavana Monastery in the vicinity of Sāvatthī. After the first watch of the night had passed, Tamali, radiant in appearance, illuminated the entire Jetavana and approached the place where the Blessed One was staying.
Having paid homage to the Blessed One, he stood respectfully to one side and spoke these verses:
“Let the brahmin who is not lazy
make the effort that should be made.
Let him not seek another existence,
having completely abandoned sensual desire.”
The Blessed One replied:
“Tamali, there is no task remaining for the brahmin,
for the brahmin has completed what had to be done.”
The Buddha then gave a profound analogy.
As long as a person has not yet found a place to land while crossing a river, that person must make every effort. He must struggle and strive with all his strength because he has not yet reached the shore.
But once he has found a landing place, reached the shore, and is standing safely on dry land, he no longer needs to struggle.
Why?
Because he has reached the far shore.
The Blessed One explained that this is an analogy for the brahmin whose mental defilements have been completely exhausted, whose wisdom is deep and contemplative.
Such a person has reached the end of birth and death.
Therefore, there is no further striving to reach the other shore, because the other shore has already been reached.
The teaching of the Tamali Sutta does not mean that effort is unnecessary. Rather, it points to the proper place and purpose of effort.
While a person has not yet reached the shore, effort is essential.
While ignorance, craving, attachment, and suffering remain, one must cultivate mindfulness, wisdom, and diligent practice.
But when the truth has been fully realized and the defilements have been completely abandoned, there is no further destination to reach.
The journey has ended.
The swimmer has reached the shore.
The struggle has come to an end.
And the one who has crossed over no longer needs to swim.
