Song: See the Benefit, See the Danger, See the Way Beyond Inspired by The The Assāda Sutta

[Verse 1]

Form gives us shelter, form gives us life,
Yet it changes through the passage of time.
Feelings bring pleasure, feelings bring pain,
When we cling to them, suffering remains.

[Pre-Chorus]

Perceptions arise and perceptions change,
Mental formations move through conditions.
Consciousness knows the world we experience,
Yet nothing remains forever the same.

[Chorus]

See the benefit, see the danger,
See the way beyond attachment.
Know what attracts us, know what binds us,
See the truth with wisdom and balance.

See the benefit, see the danger,
See the way to freedom within.
From ignorance toward the light of wisdom,
Let attachment slowly disappear.

[Verse 2]

When pleasure comes, do not hold it tight,
When suffering comes, do not run from the sight.
Watch with mindfulness, steady and clear,
See how every experience appears and disappears.

[Bridge]

When we see the benefit, we learn contentment,
When we see the danger, we learn to let go.
When we see the way beyond attachment,
The heart becomes lighter and freer to grow.

[Chorus]

See the benefit, see the danger,
See the way beyond attachment.
Know what attracts us, know what binds us,
See the truth with wisdom and balance.

See the benefit, see the danger,
See the way to freedom within.
From ignorance toward the light of wisdom,
Let attachment slowly disappear.

[Final Verse]

See the benefit, see the danger,
See the path that leads beyond.
With wisdom shining in the heart,
We become free from what we once held on.

The Assāda Sutta explains the distinction between ignorance and true knowledge through a clear examination of the five aggregates—form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness—according to their benefit, danger, and the way of escape from attachment.

At Benares, Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita sat to one side and asked Venerable Sāriputta:

“Friend Sāriputta, it is said, ‘ignorance, ignorance.’ What is ignorance, and in what way is a person said to be possessed of ignorance?”

Venerable Sāriputta replied:

“Friend, an ordinary person who has not heard the Dhamma does not clearly understand, according to reality, the benefit, danger, and way of escape from form. In the same way, such a person does not clearly understand the benefit, danger, and way of escape from feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness.

Friend, this is called ignorance, and a person is said to be possessed of ignorance for this very reason.”

True Knowledge

In the second Assāda Sutta, Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita asks Venerable Sāriputta about true knowledge:

“Friend Sāriputta, it is said, ‘knowledge, knowledge.’ What is true knowledge, and in what way is a person said to be possessed of true knowledge?”

Venerable Sāriputta replied:

“Friend, a noble disciple who has learned the Dhamma clearly understands, according to reality, the benefit, danger, and way of escape from form. The same understanding applies to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness.

Friend, this is called true knowledge, and a person is said to be possessed of true knowledge for this very reason.”

The Threefold Examination

The teaching presents three important questions for contemplation:

Benefit: What is attractive, pleasant, or satisfying about this experience?

Danger: What suffering, limitation, impermanence, or bondage can arise when we become attached to it?

Way of Escape: How can attachment to it be abandoned and freedom from it be developed?

This approach is especially significant because human beings often see only the attractive side of an object, experience, or desire. When the danger and the way of release are overlooked, attachment naturally develops.

The Five Aggregates

The teaching can be applied to the five aggregates.

Form can support life and provide pleasant experiences, but it is subject to aging, illness, change, and decay.

Feeling can be pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. Pleasant feelings can bring happiness, but attachment to them can also become a source of suffering.

Perception enables recognition and memory, but perceptions can change and may not always correspond perfectly to reality.

Formations include intentions, thoughts, and mental constructions. They arise through conditions and are therefore not permanent.

Consciousness enables awareness of experiences, yet it too is conditioned and changing rather than a permanent self.

The Central Message

The Assāda Sutta teaches that wisdom requires more than recognizing what is pleasurable.

A person who sees only the attractive side of experience may become attached. A person who sees both its attractive and dangerous aspects, and understands the way of release, develops a deeper and more liberating form of wisdom.

Thus:

Ignorance is not clearly understanding the benefit, danger, and way of escape from the five aggregates.

True knowledge is clearly understanding the benefit, danger, and way of escape from the five aggregates according to reality.

The teaching encourages us to look directly at experience with mindfulness and wisdom—not rejecting life, but understanding it clearly enough that we are no longer enslaved by attachment.
