On July 27, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, acting Prime Minister, chaired a meeting to monitor the Thai-Cambodian border situation at the Trat Provincial Hall. Attending the meeting were Mr. Chaninthorn Rungthanakiat, Secretary to the Minister of Interior; Mr. Anusit Sampantarat, Permanent Secretary of the Interior; Mr. Natthaphong Sanguanjit, Governor of Trat; and representatives from security agencies.
Mr. Phumtham was briefed by the Marine Task Force of Trat and the provincial administration that the situation involving the use of weapons is currently under control. Cambodian forces have retreated into their own territory, but both sides remain stationed in a defensive posture. Regarding evacuation efforts, 4,754 displaced persons have been relocated to 16 shelters across three districts. Facilities are prepared to accommodate up to 20,000 evacuees if needed.
Mr. Phumtham stated that his visit to Trat was due to it being one of six locations targeted by Cambodian cross-border artillery fire. Martial law had already been declared in this area, and he wanted to assess local preparedness in case the situation escalates. He issued policy directives to governors of all seven Thai provinces bordering Cambodia, assigning them full responsibility for "protecting the rear areas" and safeguarding civilians from Cambodian aggression, which violates multiple international agreements.
Additionally, Mr. Phumtham mentioned discussions with the President of the United States, reaffirming Thailand’s willingness to pursue a ceasefire prioritizing the safety of Thai citizens. He stressed that Cambodia must demonstrate sincerity in troop withdrawal to alleviate public concern, as recent Cambodian attacks with heavy weaponry have damaged homes, hospitals, and gas stations within Thailand. Thailand’s response is purely for defense. "Thailand did not initiate the aggression."
“The military handles the front line, but administrative officials must fully protect the rear,” said Phumtham. "The government has increased emergency funds for governors in affected provinces to manage the situation comprehensively, including the provision of essential supplies. Coordination has also been made with the police to secure evacuated residential areas."
He concluded with a caution to the media: “Please be careful not to disclose safe zones, as doing so could impact ongoing military operations.”
