On July 31, 2025, Major General Winthai Suvaree, Spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, announced that the Army, through its Intelligence Department, held a meeting with ASEAN defence attachés accredited to Thailand. The meeting was led by the Malaysian Defence Attaché to Thailand and took place at Srisitthisongkhram Building, Army Headquarters. Lieutenant General Kamchai Wongsri, Director-General of the Army Intelligence Department, presided over the discussion.
The primary objective of the meeting was to provide updates and discuss developments concerning the Thai–Cambodian border situation, including the establishment of an Interim ASEAN Defence Attachés Monitoring Team tasked with observing the ceasefire along the border area.
The discussion followed the ceasefire agreement reached in Malaysia on July 28, 2025, in which ASEAN member states agreed to urgently form a temporary monitoring team comprising military diplomats from member nations. The team will serve as an initial mechanism for monitoring the situation and building mutual trust between the two sides.
The meeting also included discussions on the future establishment of the ASEAN Monitoring Team (AMIT), which would serve as a permanent mechanism to oversee developments in the region. This issue will be tabled for further discussion at the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting between Thailand and Cambodia, scheduled for August 4, 2025.
The Royal Thai Army reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate on all fronts to achieve tangible outcomes. Thailand also reiterated its commitment to international norms, emphasizing non-aggression and non-violence as means to de-escalate conflicts and promote lasting peace and stability in the region.
