Thai Monastic Universities Move Forward! Opening a New Frontier: “Buddhist Artificial Intelligence (BAI-gpt)” Integrating Buddhist Metaphysics into the Next Generation of AI Architecture
This article presents the concept of Buddhist Artificial Intelligence (BAI)—an integration of Buddhist metaphysics with computer engineering to develop a prototype model known as BAI-gpt, designed to transcend the limitations of contemporary AI systems. The initiative focuses on addressing the ethical challenges of artificial intelligence through a non-anthropocentric framework, drawing upon the principles of Śūnyatā (Emptiness) and Dependent Origination (Pratītyasamutpāda) to inform data architecture and system design.
Rather than relying solely on conventional mathematical optimization, this technology shifts toward the use of virtue-based metrics and a structured 4E Workflow process to ensure that AI systems operate in alignment with Buddhist principles while minimizing human bias.
The article also highlights international innovations, including Bodhisattva-inspired robots and machine-generated Buddhist scriptures, reflecting an evolving relationship between technology and spirituality in the modern era.
Such developments mark the beginning of a new age of Artificial Spiritual Intelligence—one that does not merely prioritize computational intelligence, but aspires to reduce suffering and foster the ethical evolution of global society.
